Summer school helps thousands of New York City third-graders advance

New York City officials expect fewer than 5,000 students, about the same number as last year, to have to repeat third grade this year. Nearly 4,000 other children who had initially failed reading and math tests last spring improved their skills enough during the summer to meet the cutoffs for fourth grade.
