Ongoing layoffs spark fears over recovery's strength

Applications for jobless benefits spiked to a nine-month high last week, raising worries about the pace and strength of the economic recovery. Construction workers are losing jobs in Georgia, while manufacturing layoffs have plagued Indiana. The Labor Department reported on Thursday that initial claims for unemployment insurance increased by 12,000 last week to 500,000, a third consecutive increase.
