Plastic sargasso baffles scientists

Scientists are sifting through trash skimmed from the surface of the Atlantic Ocean in a bid to figure out why there isn't more of the stuff. A vast mat of plastic trash still exists on the ocean surface, but scientists believe much of the world's plastic flotsam is swiftly broken down into small pieces, a sizable proportion of which then sinks into the ocean.
