Losing weight and getting medical nutrition therapy from a registered dietitian are part of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' draft guidelines to prevent prediabetes from becoming type 2 diabetes. The guidelines, presented at the American Association of Diabetes Educators' annual meeting, also call for reducing a patient's glycemic index and glycemic load and encouraging consumption of vegetable protein instead of animal protein. RD Shelley Mesznik, who helped draft the recommendations, said just losing weight is more important than achieving a specific amount of weight loss.
