Calif. reviewing PG&E safety program following plant demolition mishap

California authorities are examining a state-monitored safety program following a PG&E power-plant demolition Aug. 3 in Bakersfield that went awry and injured several spectators. Officials at PG&E and the California Public Utilities Commission aren't sure if the utility's Contractor Safety Program -- which the state ordered PG&E to establish -- was in effect in Bakersfield because it is still in the pilot phase and is implemented on a limited basis. The CPUC is expected to take a more hands-on role regarding safety issues as part of PG&E's safety program.
