China inaugurates ambitious plan to boost broadband

China's State Council will invest in boosting broadband speeds across the country over the next two years, with plans to deliver access at average rates of 20 megabits per second to urban areas, a nearly sevenfold increase from the current level. The goals, which will necessitate the deployment of massive amounts of fiber through 2015, will lay the foundation for the next stage in China's broadband plan, which seeks Internet speeds of 50 Mbps in urban centers by 2020, according to media reports.
