General Atomics is touting its small modular reactor design as it works to secure funding from the Department of Energy. The company's Energy Multiplier Module design would operate at more than 1,500 degrees Fahrenheit and would weigh only 530 tons. "The Department of Energy has a choice: It can either continue to fund technology that hasn't changed very much in 50 years or it can take a bold step to a possible new path to nuclear energy," said John Parmentola, senior vice president at G.A.'s Energy and Advance Concepts Group.
