Housing starts rise 5.9%, driven by multifamily construction

Home construction increased 5.9% last month compared with June, to an annual rate of 896,000 units, according to the Department of Commerce. Construction of multifamily homes climbed 26%, while construction of single-family housing declined 2.2%. An uptick in mortgage rates might have dimmed consumer demand, homebuilders say.
