IRS guidance needed to clarify court ruling on benefits for same-sex couples

Married same-sex couples risk paying more in taxes without guidance from the Internal Revenue Service on how it will implement the Supreme Court decision invalidating the federal Defense of Marriage Act. The clock is ticking on the three-year statute of limitations for amendments seeking refunds from prior returns. The IRS said in June that it would "move swiftly to provide revised guidance in the near future."
