Commentary: Focus should be on improving bridge design

While the collapse of the I-35W bridge in Minneapolis raised the call for better maintenance of the nation's bridges, there is also the need to simply design and build better bridges in the first place, writes Princeton structural engineering professor David Billington in this opinion piece. The American bridge engineering community often fails to see that efficiency, economy and elegance can work together for successful bridge building, Billington writes.
