Study: Bone-growth protein helps fight obesity

U.S. scientists found that BMP-7 -- a protein that promotes bone growth -- also plays a role in developing brown fat cells, which help burn calories. The researchers reported that mice injected with BMP-7-treated progenitor cells developed more brown fat tissues and gained less weight compared with those that did not develop brown fat. The findings could lead to drugs that prevent and treat metabolic disorders linked to obesity, researchers said.
