Dam retrofits expand access to hydropower, experts say

Retrofitting dams that have no existing power facilities is one way to expand the nation's hydropower capacity, experts say. In Ohio, American Municipal Power has launched the first of five retrofit projects on the Ohio River. When it is completed, the project will generate enough power to serve 350,000 homes. Experts note that retrofitting existing dams can avoid the opposition from environmental groups that often surrounds new hydropower projects.
