Retailers playing up the basics, discounts

Gap, Old Navy and Banana Republic are focusing on their core products -- a new line of premium denim at the Gap and trendy basics at Old Navy -- to survive the recession. At the same time, Sears and Kmart are playing up promotions to win over their key customers. So far, both tactics seem to be working.
