A transportation hub on the site of the former World Trade Center is a striking element of the reconstruction project, but its high cost and slow development progress have raised some concerns. Designed by architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava, the transit hub will cost $3.2 billion to build. In an interview with Bloomberg, Calatrava noted that the actual station is a small portion of the hub's overall cost, which also includes retail space and an underground web of pedestrian passageways. He says the station's design will convey lightness and airiness.
