Number claiming jobless benefits hits 500,000 for the first time since November

Claims for unemployment benefits rose by 12,000 to reach half a million people last week, according to the Labor Department. It was the third consecutive weekly increase and the first time since November that the number of people receiving unemployment benefits has reached 500,000. The department's report sparked worries about the health of the economy.
