Stocks fall on disappointing jobs, manufacturing reports

Reports of higher-than-expected unemployment claims in the previous week and lower-than-expected manufacturing activity in the mid-Atlantic states in August drove U.S. stock markets to fall by well over 1% Thursday. Recent corporate earnings reports, however, have been positive and have only added to investor uncertainty about the economic recovery.
