Mental health NPs crucial in Air Force medical services

The Air Force is recruiting more psychiatric and mental health nurse practitioners to cover the needs of airmen and their families. Maj. Brian Cunningham, a mental health nurse practitioner with the 446th Aeromedical Staging Squadron, helps Air Force personnel dealing with mental illness, a job he says gives him a clear sense of purpose. "The psychological impacts of war can be and are traumatic to the point of debilitation," said Lt. Col. Keith Smith, a colleague who has seen the impact of Cunningham's work.
