BI-RADS 3 breast lesions may not require 6-month check

Most ultrasound-detected BI-RADS 3 lesions were found to be not malignant at six- and 12-month follow-ups, according to a study published in Radiology that analyzed data from the American College of Radiology Imaging Network 6666 trial. Of 745 BI-RADS 3 lesions found with ultrasound, 124 were biopsied and only six were malignant. "Breast density notification legislation is driving increased use of screening ultrasound," said researcher Dr. Richard Barr. "And since we're conducting more ultrasound screening, we're finding more BI-RADS 3 lesions."
