"Bridge Bash" in L.A. finishes ahead of schedule

Demolition work on a 700-foot connector bridge in Los Angeles, which the California Department of Transportation dubbed Bridge Bash, was done in 18 hours instead of the planned 20, allowing CalTrans to open the 405 freeway two hours earlier. As a safety precaution, more than 100 steel plates were used as shields to keep the 3,600 tons of debris off the highway below. The demolition is part of the $277 million carpool lane project linking three city freeways, the 405, 22 and 605.
