Company says new type of nuclear reactor produces major savings

A small nuclear reactor that uses ceramics and incorporates helium as a coolant can run hotter and produce a 40% savings in generation costs, making it competitive with natural gas, according to San Diego-based General Atomics. The company is now seeking Energy Department funding for further development of the reactor, which the company also says is safer than conventional nuclear plants and can reduce waste output by 80%.
