Economists wonder why more people don't buy immediate annuities

Economists have puzzled for years about why there aren't more sales of immediate annuities, also called single premium income annuities, to people preparing for retirement. Proponents say the products are a reliable protection against longevity risk, the danger that a retiree will run out of money during his or her lifetime.
