How will the common core affect student calculator use?

Students taking common core math exams in grades 3 to 5 will not be permitted to use calculators, but students in middle and high schools will have some access to the devices, according to policies by the two consortia developing the exams. The issue refocuses attention on a long-standing debate about calculator use in the classroom. Patrick Honner, a math teacher at Brooklyn Technical High School in New York City, said, "I personally see them as useful tools, but like all tools, they need to be used appropriately."
