While Internet users often assume their search engine queries are made anonymously, in fact, most well-known portals and search engines track users via their unique although ever-changing IP (Internet protocol) addresses. A San Jose Mercury News examination of the privacy policies of AOL, Google, MSN and Yahoo! shows it is relatively simple to track a user's online behavior across the Internet, using in part the search data collected by major Web firms.
