Mall owners try to lure back bargain-hunting shoppers

Upscale binge shopping by consumers is on the decline, prompting mall owners to boost efforts to attract shoppers. Shoppers are now more likely to hunt bargains at discount retailers, putting particular pressure on landlords who rent to retailers that supply home furnishings and electronics. "We are operating as if this sort of environment will be around for another year or so," said Peter Lowy, head of U.S. operations for Westfield Group.
