Guidelines issued for treating pregnant women with depression

Treatment of pregnant women suffering from mild depression should begin with psychotherapy, before antidepressant medications are prescribed, according to recommendations from the American Psychiatric Association and American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. The groups said women with moderate to severe depression who are on medication should continue taking it during pregnancy.
