Malaysian Health Ministry ups cord-blood storage target

The Malaysian Health Ministry is aiming to increase the number of umbilical cord-blood units stored in the National Blood Bank from 3,000 to 10,000 by the end of 2010. "About 70 to 80 leukemia patients have recovered after undergoing hemopoietic stem cell transplant from umbilical cord blood compared with using chemotherapy and other cancer treatments," Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said.
