A class of pain medications called non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs revolutionized the way veterinarians help pets deal with pain associated with everything from surgery to chronic conditions including arthritis, writes veterinarian Lawrence Gerson. The drugs come with the potential for side effects including gastrointestinal distress in the short-term and kidney and liver damage in the long-term.
