Are reference checks meaningless?

Reference checks aren't very helpful because they always yield glowing reviews about the candidate, says Marty Parker, chairman and CEO of Waterstone Human Capital. A better method is to ask the candidate to describe the details of former work relationships while encouraging them to discuss negative aspects of these relationships.
