Digital coupons become popular as paper-coupon use drops

Coupon redemption declined by 14.3% last year and decreased an additional 6.6% in the first half of 2013. However, while paper coupons have dropped, digital deals received through loyalty programs are on the rise. "Our loyalty coupon mailings, which are personalized and more specific to each customer, have redemption rates regularly topping 60 percent to 70 percent," Kroger spokeswoman Jackie Siekmann wrote in an e-mail. "Redemption rates for the industry are typically 3 to 5 percent."
