U.S. businesses ramp up hiring of part-time workers

Among the nearly 1 million people whom U.S. employers hired this year, 3 in 4 ended up in part-time jobs, many poorly paid. When requesting part-time workers, many employers cited their desire to avoid the costs of the federal health care law, executives of several staffing firms said. Some employers say part-timers give them flexibility in managing changes in the economy.
