Zoo is an island of calm in the stormy seas of Jerusalem

The Tisch Family Zoological Gardens in Jerusalem is a kind of unofficial safe zone where Israelis and Palestinians work and visit side by side in relative peace despite the conflict outside its walls. "There's something about animals. It's about everyone. It doesn't matter if you're Shinto, Buddhist, Muslim; an elephant is an elephant, a rhino is a rhino," said zoo director Shai Doron. "Even though this zoo is technically for the wildlife, it's really for people."
