USDA chief: Biofuel will benefit farmers, bolster national security

The U.S. could increase farm income and boost national security by increasing the production of renewable biofuels, USDA Secretary Ed Schafer said at a forum with Sen. John Thune, R-S.D. Expanding biofuel production to 42 billion gallons would eliminate the need to import 1 billion barrels of oil, Schafer said. Congress will consider a bill covering the use of forest residue in making cellulosic ethanol, Thune said.
