Kansas City, Mo., district plans changes to put students first

The Kansas City, Mo., school district is working to make students the focus of their efforts to transform schools this year. The district's school-improvement plan -- which began last year under the leadership of new Superintendent John Covington -- has included closing 40% of schools, dismissing 1,000 employees and enlisting the help of business and community leaders to change the culture to focus more on the needs of students in district schools.
