Some rural airport subsidies should be cut, GOP lawmakers say

A group of Republican lawmakers is urging Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood to use his ability to waive cuts to rural airport subsidies judiciously. "Since this provision was approved by both chambers of Congress, we expect the Department of Transportation to implement the reforms and only grant a waiver to the 90-mile requirement where there is clear and substantial evidence of 'geographic characteristics' resulting in 'undue difficulty accessing' the nearest hub airport," the Republican senators wrote in a letter to LaHood.
