Ga. school considers role of social media in crisis situations

Some parents of students at Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy in Decatur, Ga., wanted to know why school officials did not notify them via social media during a recent school emergency. District officials said they were gathering information and decided to notify parents via the news media. Still, Interim Superintendent Michael Thurmond said he is reviewing the process. "You always have to understand who you're serving and the population of which you serve," he said, adding, "Some populations have greater access to the social media than others."
