NIH-funded clinical trial puts preemies at risk, advocacy group says

In a letter, advocacy group Public Citizen has asked HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to halt the recruitment of premature babies for a National Institutes of Health-funded clinical trial aimed at determining the best approach to treat anemia. Evidence suggests that restrictive transfusion raises the odds of neurologic injury and other health risks among extremely premature babies, and the trial would subject more than 900 patients to such treatment, the group said.
