Telecom sales of location-based insights projected to grow to $11 billion in 3 years

Demand for location insight services from retailers will make anonymous, aggregated location data worth $11 billion to the mobile carriers that provide it by 2016, according to analytics provider JDSU. The trends that emerge from aggregated location data can help retailers determine where to put up a new store or help local governments plan public transportation routes, said Mike Flanagan of JSDU subsidiary Arieso, and telecommunications companies are in a strong position to repackage such information from the location data it already collects for its own network analysis.
