Journalists face increasingly difficult working environments overseas and at home, with pressure mounting from government entities keen on protecting secrets and religious extremists abroad looking to send a message through violence, reporters and editors say. Martin Baron, executive editor of The Washington Post, says that "people who are in authority have a preference for journalists not being witness to wrongdoing."
