Study shows impact of futile ICU care

A study of five ICUs at one health system showed at least one patient was being given futile treatment on 16% of days during which an ICU was full, while others waited for emergency care or died at other facilities while waiting for a transfer to a critical care unit. University of California, Los Angeles, and RAND researchers wrote in Critical Care Medicine that it is "unjust" when patients wait for ICU care because people who cannot benefit from ICU care occupy the beds.
