Corrosive pigeon droppings long documented on Minneapolis bridge

Investigators have yet to identify the cause of the collapse of the I-35W bridge in Minneapolis, but one significant factor that has been documented for years is the buildup of pigeon dung on the span. The corrosive dung certainly helped the steel beams on the bridge rust at a faster rate, and inspectors noted the heavy pigeon dung buildup as far back as a 1987-1989 report.
