118,000 HAMP cases are still unresolved after 6 months

A government program to help struggling homeowners has a backlog of 118,000 people who have been waiting six months or more -- three months longer than they are supposed to -- for permanent modifications to their mortgages. Loan providers blame the delays in resolving cases under the Home Affordable Modification Program to changing government requirements and borrowers who are slow to provide paperwork. Borrowers say lenders are careless with paperwork and unresponsive to follow-up calls.
