NYC, D.C. to try out common core standards:

New York City and Washington, D.C., will join Albuquerque, N.M.; Atlanta; Boston; Cleveland; Philadelphia; and St. Paul, Minn., in piloting the Common Core State Standards in classrooms. The effort is supported by the Council of the Great City Schools and grant funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Similar pilot programs are planned for other districts.
