Facial masks containing bee venom claim to stimulate collagen and elastin production, smoothing lines and wrinkles. Melittin, the active compound in bee venom, has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, and can temporarily improve circulation and relax the facial muscles, but there have not been enough clinical trials to judge the effect in facial products, says dermatologist Jeannette Graf. Repeated use could cause severe allergies or damage essential cell membranes, she said.
