Construction of Seattle tunnel starts with soil tests

Testing the soil below Seattle is an important step toward the construction of a tunnel that will replace the Alaskan Way Viaduct, officials said. Six drilling rigs are now pulling soil samples from up to 300 feet below ground in Seattle. Officials say they will insert grout into patches of loose soil. When test-drilling is completed, they will start taking bids for a tunnel-boring machine.
