Some Texas teachers to be offered new merit-pay program

About one in five Texas school districts have agreed to participate in the state's new teacher merit-pay program, District Awards for Teacher Excellence. A previous merit-pay program recently ended after four years with little success. Under the new DATE, participating districts will give teachers up to $1,500 for improving student test scores. One teacher said it will pit colleagues against each other, but that some will appreciate the extra money.
