Joule nears biofuel production with sunlight, executive says

Joule Unlimited is "at the vanguard of a new approach" to biofuel production that does not require biomass feedstocks such as corn, sugar or algae, said CEO Bill Sims. Joule has developed a bio-based "phototroph" that is capable of synthesizing energy from sunlight, carbon dioxide and inorganic substances, Sims said. Aside from what the company terms "solar fuel," Joule's technology would be capable of producing ethanol, biodiesel and renewable chemicals, Sims added.
