New York landowners remain divided over the possibility of hydraulic fracturing on their properties, with some perceiving gas leases as an economic lifesaver and others concerned about how it will affect the environment. The state Assembly is considering a temporary ban on such drilling for natural gas until May 2011, and the measure has already passed the Senate. The moratorium would buy time for the New York Department of Environmental Conservation to toughen drilling rules.
