Paper: Foreign retailers appear to spur Chinese exports

Attention is expected to turn to global rebalancing as the US economy cools. The concept is that China and other economies with large trade surpluses should encourage more domestic consumption and boost imports. Expansion in China by foreign retailers, such as Carrefour and Wal-Mart, should help the rebalancing, but a paper by a trio of economists says the opposite is happening.
