FHA approves $1.9B tunnel project to replace Alaskan Way Viaduct

The Federal Highway Administration has approved proposals to replace the Alaskan Way Viaduct with a bored tunnel beneath downtown Seattle. Seattle Tunnel Partners, the project's contractor, will begin final design and construction of the 57-foot-diameter, 1.7-mile-long tunnel. The $1.9 billion tunnel is projected to open in 2015.
