School transforms with single-gender courses, leadership focus

A struggling school near Pittsburgh reopened Monday offering students a college-prep curriculum, with single-gender academic courses and a new focus on leadership, equality and social awareness. A standard bell schedule has been replaced with 80-minute classes that officials say minimize disruptions and offer a college-like environment, while the school day and school year have been extended and a new dress code is in place.
